Successful business people know that all business is built on successful relationships. Networking is the fundamental tool for building business relationships. Through networking we can find new business contacts, meet mentors, learn more about our industries, accelerate our professional development, and find valuable new resources. All of these benefits, of course, accompany the possibility of learning about new career opportunities.
Networking opens doors.
If you struggle with what to talk about, just know that people love to talk about themselves. If you don\’t know what to talk about, begin with a question. Ask what they do for a living. Let them tell you all about themselves and make a mental note, remembering their name and occupation. If they tell you about an issue they are having and you know an answer or can send them the name of a contact, you have made a lasting impression. Listen with sincerity. If you let the other person talk about themselves and you will leave them with the impression that you are an amazing conversationalist!
Remember to use the person\’s name. One way to get the attention of another is to say their name and people love to hear their own names. Additionally, the more you say someone\’s name, the easier it will be to remember for you and the more it will add to your level of comfort and rapport.
As much as possible, remember to carry business cards. This will help the other person remember your name and compel them to give you one of their business cards. That little piece of paper will prove to be an asset.
Be sure to follow up with an email or phone call to every networking contact you meet. Tell them that it was a pleasure talking to them and offer to assist them with any of their future needs. Don\’t underestimate your knowledge base and ability to help others. Understand that networking is a two-way street and benefits everyone at some time or another. You may just have the insight or piece of information that will help another person on your network.
