Business Success Mindset: Positive Thinking is the Key to Success

It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude.
~Zig Ziglar

It is a well known economic truth that bad economies produce more entrepreneurs. As more people lose their jobs and find themselves without a steady income or a way to utilize their skills, the number of talented, skilled, and capable people turning to self-employment rises.

The statistics regarding the success rate of small businesses vary widely. Some statistics suggest that 80 percent of enterprises fail within their first year. On a more positive note, the Small Business Administration (SBA) asserts that two-thirds of all business startups survive two years and forty-four percent survive at least four years. Fortunately, there are certain things you can do to increase your odds of success.

Businesses can be risky ventures. They are multi-faceted and there are numerous issues that need addressed. Many business owners focus on finding the right opportunity, perfect location, writing a solid business plan, marketing and advertising. While these are vital qualities of that can determine the success or failure of any venture, there is one aspect that is often neglected; the power of positive thinking and one’s personal mindset can influence the success of his or her business.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can\’t, you are usually right.
~Henry Ford

If a person starts a business with the attitude that it is going to fail, it probably will. Conversely, businesses built on a foundation of success stand a better chance of success. Starting a business requires commitment, focus, determination and motivation. The problem with negative thinking is that it robs people of the very traits necessary to succeed.

In order to be motivated, people need to believe that they can perform in a manner that allows them to reach their goals. To do this, they must get into a positive frame of mind about their abilities. This is best accomplished by focusing more on our talent than our perceived deficits. We need to understand that failures are simply learning opportunities that give us the chance to shine brighter next time. Failure does not reflect on a person: Failure only provides teaching moments and opportunities to reflect on how to better succeed next time. Setbacks are only challenges to overcome.

I have not failed. I\’ve just found 10,000 ways that won\’t work.
~Thomas A. Edison

Positive thinking is motivating. It can propel us towards our destination with drive, determination and an eye for potential opportunities. A positive attitude is crucial to the success of a businessperson; positive people are productive, motivated, and enthusiastic about their work.

Positive thinking also improves one’s focus and determination. By focusing on potential successes rather than avoiding taking any action out of fear of failure, one’s determination to be successful increases and that person puts more energy of possible ways to reach his or her goals. In this way, positive thinking can help a businessperson recognize new opportunities.

People with negative attitudes have a tendency to dismiss new ideas or opportunities out of fear of taking risks or their insistence that nothing will work. On the other hand, people with positive attitudes are open to new ideas and, if necessary, use their enthusiasm and creativity to modify ideas in order to expand upon it to suit the needs of their business. A positive mindset lends itself to strategic and creative thinking which can open up endless opportunities for the future.

Happy thoughts attract happy people into your life.
~Remez Sasson

Positive thinking is contagious. Not only do positive people add an air of enthusiasm to the atmosphere, they present a positive image of the company when connecting with potential customers or business contacts.

Part of holding a positive mindset is believing in the company and the products and services that it offers. Upbeat attitudes give people an air of confidence and improve their interactions with other people. Potential customers can hear the confidence underlying a sales pitch. That, coupled with excitement and enthusiasm, makes it easier for the customer to choose your product or service over that of the competition. It can also draw people towards positive mentors who can help them plan for success. One trait most successful entrepreneurs share is that of a positive attitude. Holding a positive attitude is one way to attract successful and positive mentors to your network. Finding positive minded and enthusiastic mentors can spare you some expensive lessons learned from experience*.

Above all, remember, your mindset can make the difference.
